Life & Income Protection

Protection for the people who rely on you

Understanding Your Options

Life and Income Protection, Explained Simply

Protection is not about expecting the worst. It is about making sure the people who rely on you are not left dealing with financial stress if life takes an unexpected turn. Life and income protection generally focuses on two realities: what happens if you are no longer here, and what happens if you are still here but unable to work.

01

If You Are No Longer Here

Life insurance exists for one simple reason: to protect the people who rely on you. If something unexpected happened, bills would still arrive, housing would still matter, and daily life would continue. Life insurance helps ensure your family is not left carrying financial pressure on top of everything else.

02

If You Are Unable to Work

Not all financial strain comes from loss. Illness or injury can interrupt income just as quickly. Income and living benefit protections are designed to help cover essential expenses if you are unable to work, giving you and your family breathing room while you recover.

03

Coverage That Fits

There is no single right amount and no one right solution. When we talk about protection, the focus is on who depends on you financially, what responsibilities would remain, and what level of coverage feels realistic for your situation. Protection should fit your life today and remain flexible as life changes.

Different Types of Life Insurance

There are different types of life insurance, each designed for different needs and stages of life. The goal is not to choose the most complex option, but to understand how each type works and decide what fits your situation.

Term Life Insurance

Term Life Insurance

Term Life Insurance provides coverage for a specific period of time, such as 10, 20, or 30 years. It is commonly used to protect temporary needs, like a mortgage, replacing income while children are dependent, or covering outstanding debts. Term insurance is typically the most affordable option and is often renewable or convertible to permanent insurance later, depending on the policy. For many people, Term Insurance is a practical starting point.

Permanent Life Insurance

Permanent Life Insurance

Permanent Life Insurance is designed to provide coverage for your entire lifetime, as long as premiums are paid. It is often used when protection needs are long-term or lifelong and does not expire after a set period of time, offering continuity as life evolves. Some permanent policies may also include a savings component that builds value over time and can support longer-term planning. There are two main types of permanent life insurance: Whole Life and Universal Life.

The two types of Permanent Life Insurance

Whole Life Insurance

Whole Life Insurance provides lifelong coverage with predictable premiums and guaranteed values, and is often chosen by people who value stability and long-term planning. There are two common types of Whole Life Insurance: participating (par) and non-participating (non-par). Participating policies may pay dividends over time, depending on the insurer’s performance. These dividends are not guaranteed, but they can be used in different ways, such as increasing coverage, reducing future premiums, or building additional value within the policy. Non-participating policies do not pay dividends, but they offer fixed guarantees and a more straightforward structure, making them simpler and more predictable. Both are designed to be steady, long-term solutions, and which one makes sense depends on your goals, preferences, and how much flexibility you want.

Universal Life Insurance

Universal Life Insurance provides lifelong coverage with greater flexibility in how premiums and contributions are structured over time. It allows adjustments as income, responsibilities, or priorities change, which can be helpful as life evolves. Some Universal Life policies also include an investment component, where a portion of the premium may be allocated to investment options within the policy, depending on how it is set up. Because of this flexibility, the policy’s performance and sustainability can vary, making regular review important to ensure it continues to align with your goals. Universal life insurance is often considered by people who value flexibility and are comfortable taking a more active role in long-term planning.

Workplace Coverage

Group Life Insurance

Some people have life insurance through their employer. Group life insurance can be helpful while you are employed, but it often comes with limitations. Coverage amounts are usually set by the employer, and coverage ends when your employment ends. Because of this, group insurance is often viewed as a starting point rather than a complete or permanent solution, especially for protection that needs to continue beyond a job change or retirement.

PROTECTION DURING SERIOUS ILLNESS

Critical Illness Protection

Critical Illness insurance provides support when life changes but continues. While life insurance protects your family if you pass away, Critical Illness coverage is designed to support you if you survive a serious diagnosis. If you are diagnosed with a covered condition such as cancer, heart attack, or stroke, the policy pays a tax-free lump sum with no restrictions on how the funds can be used. Many people use it to replace income during recovery, cover mortgage or household expenses, access treatment options not fully covered, or reduce financial pressure so they can focus on healing. It is not about expecting the worst, but about protecting stability if life takes an unexpected turn. For many families, Critical Illness works alongside life and income protection to create a more complete foundation.

Protection During Illness or Injury

Accident and Sickness Insurance

Many people insure their home and their car, but overlook the fact that their ability to earn an income is one of their most valuable assets.

Accident and Sickness coverage, sometimes called living benefits, can help support you if illness or injury prevents you from working.

This type of protection can help with ongoing expenses if income is interrupted for a period of time.

We will review what coverage you already have, often through work, and talk through whether additional protection would be helpful.

The goal is not to insure every possibility.
It is to avoid being caught unprepared.

"We appreciated how clear and pressure-free the conversation was. Dave took the time to explain our options in plain language and helped us understand what actually mattered for our situation. We never felt rushed or pushed toward a decision. We walked away feeling informed, confident, and comfortable with the choices we made together."

FAQ

No. Conversations and reviews are always complimentary. My goal is to help you understand your options clearly, without pressure or obligation.

I currently represent Industrial Alliance Financial Group. While I work with their products, my role is to explain how coverage works, outline available options within that framework, and help you decide whether they fit your needs. The focus is always on suitability, not sales.

I help with life insurance, accident and sickness coverage, group life insurance, and insurance-based savings such as segregated funds. The focus is always on explaining how these options work and whether they fit your situation.

Group insurance through work can be helpful, but it often has limitations, such as coverage amounts set by the employer or coverage ending when employment ends. Whether additional coverage makes sense depends on your circumstances. The goal is simply to understand what you have and where there may or may not be gaps.

It starts with a conversation. From there, we may review your current coverage and talk through options. If you choose to move forward, I will guide you through the next steps. If not, that is completely fine. There is no fixed timeline and no pressure to decide quickly.

Nothing at all. You do not need to know what you want or have documents ready. If you do have existing coverage or questions in mind, we can review them, but the conversation can start wherever you are.

No. Insurance is about protecting people from financial strain, and that applies to many situations. Individuals at different stages of life may have reasons to consider coverage. The purpose of the conversation is simply to understand whether it is relevant for you.

Affordability is an important part of the conversation. Coverage can often be structured in different ways to reflect changing economic realities and personal budgets. The goal is to explore options that balance protection with what feels financially comfortable, without creating pressure or over-commitment.

No. My practice is focused on insurance and insurance-based solutions, including segregated funds. If you need advice outside this scope, I am happy to refer you to other professionals when appropriate.

Not at all. Many people reach out because they are unsure, have questions, or want a second opinion. You do not need to be prepared or make decisions during the conversation.

No. My role is to provide clear information, answer your questions, and help you understand your options. The decision is always yours. Sometimes that leads to putting coverage or a strategy in place. Other times, it simply leads to clarity. Both outcomes are completely valid.

I work with individuals and families at different stages of life, including homeowners, self-employed professionals, business owners, and people thinking more seriously about long-term planning. You do not need to fit a specific profile to reach out.

Yes. Meetings are available both virtually via Zoom and in person. We can choose the option that works best for your schedule and comfort.

We start with a conversation. I ask questions, explain options in plain language, and answer yours honestly. You decide what happens next, if anything, and when.

A Thoughtful Way Forward

A conversation, not a commitment

Understanding life and income protection does not mean you need to decide right away. It means having clear, honest information so you can make thoughtful choices at your own pace. My role is to explain how these options work, answer your questions, and give you the space to decide what fits your life. Sometimes the outcome is putting protection in place. Other times, it is simply clarity. Both are valuable.
